Stonington House

LOCATION: Stonington, CT

PROJECT: New Construction

This new waterfront home in Stonington, CT was nearly half a lifetime in the making. Our clients purchased this spectacular site overlooking Fishers Island Sound and a tidal marsh in the late 1980's. Initially, they spent weekend afternoons visiting their land dreaming of someday building a house here.

When the cottage on the adjacent lot became available, they bought it and renovated it into their summer house. The years passed and with retirement on the horizon, they concluded the renovated cottage wasn't compatible with their year round lifestyle. They hired our architecture firm to design extensive renovations but eventually it became clear that new construction would better meet their needs.

The builder and subcontractors of this Stonington coastal home have also worked on some of the finest houses along the New England coast and yet they all refer to this project as, "… my favorite house!"

The design, a pair of one room wide shingled volumes and a single-story stone building tucks quietly into the waterfront landscape. The open plan kitchen, dining and living room span in between with double hung windows and a 16-foot wide mahogany sliding glass door framing the coastal views. Both the exterior and interior are highly detailed and well-crafted without excess or ostentation.

When the project was wrapping up, the homeowners couldn’t wait to tell us that their friends continually ask, “What style is this house… Modern or traditional? The answer is both, but most importantly it’s “their” style.
